Objects can be of almost any shape or geometry and typically are produced using digital model data from a\u00a0<a title=\"3D modeling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/3D_modeling\">3D model<\/a>\u00a0or another electronic data source such as an\u00a0<a title=\"Additive Manufacturing File Format\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Additive_Manufacturing_File_Format\">Additive Manufacturing File<\/a>\u00a0(AMF) file (usually in sequential layers). There are many different\u00a0<a title=\"3D printing processes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/3D_printing_processes\">technologies<\/a>, like\u00a0<a title=\"Stereolithography\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stereolithography\">stereolithography<\/a>\u00a0(STL) or\u00a0<a title=\"Fused filament fabrication\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fused_filament_fabrication#Fused_deposition_modeling\">fused deposit modeling<\/a>\u00a0(FDM). Thus, unlike material removed from a stock in the conventional machining process, 3D printing or AM builds a three-dimensional object from computer-aided design (CAD) model or AMF file, usually by successively adding material layer by layer.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/3D_printing#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The term &#8220;3D printing&#8221; originally referred to a process that deposits a\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Binder material\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Binder_material\">binder material<\/a>\u00a0onto a powder bed with\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Inkjet printer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inkjet_printer\">inkjet printer<\/a>\u00a0heads layer by layer. More recently, the term is being used in popular vernacular to encompass a wider variety of additive manufacturing techniques.
